Role of Stem Cells in Prostate Cancer Progression

The Prostate Stem Cell Team at The Institute is investigating the role of a type of cancer cell called 'stem cells' in the progression of cancer and in the response of the disease to drugs.

It is believed that stem cells, the cells that drive the cancer and which may be as few as 1 in 1000 cancer cells, may be able to evade current treatments and lead to the tumour relapsing (stop responding to treatment). The team are also looking at the genetic changes that occur when prostate cancer cells stop responding to traditional hormone treatments.

By analysing the DNA from patients who no longer respond to treatment they hope to identify genetic changes, which could ultimately be targeted by new treatments.
