Support Us: Progress

Since 1909 The Institute of Cancer Research has been pushing back the boundaries of cancer research, making dramatic discoveries and improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In particular we are the world leader in cancer genetics and a world leader in drug discovery and development.

The Brookes Lawley Building

Research costs money: your contribution is vital to our continued progress.

Recently donations and legacies from our supporters have helped build the UK's only Cancer Genomics Centre, The Brookes Lawley Building. It was opened in January 2003 by HRH The Princess Royal. She is seen here touring the laboratories and meeting Professors Brookes and Lawley, the Institute scientists who discovered that the basic cause of cancer is genetic damage.

200 of our scientists work together in the Centre on everything from gene discovery through to drug development. We aim to screen all human genes for the abnormalities associated with cancer, allowing revolutionary new therapies to be developed over the next 5-10 years. So far we have shown that the BRAF gene is implicated in 70% of a type of skin cancer called malignant melanoma, which is usually fatal if left untreated.
