Targeted Therapies for Prostate Cancer

Treatment options for patients with advanced prostate cancer, which is resistant to standard hormone treatment, remain unacceptable. Therefore researchers at The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust are developing and evaluating a number of new rationally designed, molecularly targeted, novel anti-cancer drugs to target this form of the disease.

More than 100 patients are being treated each year in these early stage clinical trials, which include drugs discovered at The Institute of Cancer Research. One drug being currently trialled is a novel agent - known as Abiraterone - which targets the synthesis of male hormones including testosterone. This drug builds on the success of similar drugs used for the treatment breast cancer which block the synthesis of the hormone oestrogen.
