ORIGINAL IT GIRL, TARA PALMER-TOMKINSON AND BRITISH WINDSURFING CHAMPION,
TRISTAN BOXFORD SUPPORT THE EVERYMAN CAMPAIGN
Wednesday 30 MAY 2001
Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and British Windsurfing Champion, Tristan Boxford,
will be at The Institute of Cancer Research's laboratories to lend their
support to this year's everyman - male cancer awareness month, June.
Tristan will be dressed in his windsurfing shorts and Tara will be placing
her hand in a strategic position in front of Tristan's 'bits' to show
the message that men must protect themselves from testicular and prostate
cancers.
Tara will be sporting fashion designer Toby Pimlico's new bespoke Big
Brother T-shirt with the risqué slogan 'I like to watch' that will
raise money for the everyman campaign.
The Institute of Cancer Research was concerned about the lack of funding
into male cancers as well as a lack of general awareness of the symptoms
for testicular and prostate cancers so, to address these issues, it set
up the everyman campaign in 1997. The fourth everyman - month has the
specific aim of raising more funds for the UK's first dedicated Male Cancer
Research Centre that was set up by The Institute last year. £2million
each year is needed to support vital research into male cancers.
One man dies every hour from prostate cancer in the UK. It mainly affects
older men and has become the second most common cancer in men. Worryingly
over the next decade the incidence has been predicted to rise considerably,
overtaking lung and breast cancer.
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer amongst young men aged 20
- 35. Cases have risen by 70% in the last 20 years but doctors do not
know why.
