Psychology
Research Group
The psychosocial
research programme focuses on: the psychosocial impact of genetic
counselling and testing, particularly for breast and ovarian cancer;
the evaluation of quality of life (QoL); the psychosocial impact
of screening for prostate cancer in patients' relatives; and the
evaluation of psychological factors which improve the mental health
of patients and their families. We are collaborating on a study
(COSIP Project) examining the impact of cancer on the young children
of adult patients. We continue to contribute to QoL assessment
in multicentre trials in collaboration with the MRC leukaemia
trials group.
Much of our work falls
within prioritised areas for NHS Research and Development, especially
the psychosocial impact of genetic counselling and testing.
We have been successful
in obtaining funding for research. This includes two project grants
from Cancer Research UK relating to the psychosocial impact of
genetic testing, a Cancer Research UK grant to conduct a further
follow-up study on the relationship between psychological response
and breast cancer survival, an MRC award to support work on QoL
assessment and an EU grant to support our collaborating on the
COSIP Project.
