June is the First everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month
5 June 1998
Prostate and testicular cancer are on the increase, research is under-funded,
and men remain unaware of both the necessity for early detection and methods
of treatment.
These are key messages from The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) as
it launches the first everyman male cancer awareness month in June.
Through its everyman campaign, which was set up in September 1997,
the ICR aims to raise an initial £3 million to help fund the UK's
first dedicated male cancer research centre, and during June it will
be holding a series of events to convey these important messages.
To raise the profile of everyman and provide a more accessible
lead into the campaign, a number of MPs, sporting, show business and fashion
industry representatives have created boxer short designs which will be
unveiled in June.
Footballer, Ian Wright explains why he got involved: "I think everyman
will help bring male cancers to the forefront of people's minds. I think
it is very important to raise awareness and get men to understand how
to look after themselves."
