everyman
month June 2000
May 20, 2000
In 1997, The Institute of Cancer Research set up everyman - a national
campaign to raise awareness of and funding for male cancers. Every year,
as part of the campaign, June is designated as male cancer awareness month.
Last year's month was launched by Robbie Williams in his first ever television
commercial. The third annual everyman month happens in June this year.
What's happening in June:
- The everyman perkin - our campaign symbol - will be sold nationally
in shops including Asda, Boots Men, Paul Smith, Virgin, the Halifax
Building Society and many more
- On June 9th we're running a national fundraising day - Sports M.A.D
(Make A Difference) - encouraging people to wear their sports gear to
work and pay £1 to charity, or organise a charity sports game to
raise more funds. A top celebrity team will get the ball rolling in
May when they launch the 'Go Sports MAD National 5-a-Side Tournament
for everyman' - call our hotline on 020 7878 3810 for more information
- Educational leaflets providing information on prostate and testicular
cancer will be distributed nationally
- Clubbing against cancer - everyman is teaming up with top DJs, including
Carl Cox and Rocky, with nights around the country in aid of everyman
starting in June and lasting throughout the summer
- everyman is linking up with ASDA stores throughout the country, selling
boxer shorts, father's day cards and male toiletries - the perfect presents
for Father's Day!
- We'll also be linking up with Boots Men stores who will be selling
the perkin and giving all tips to the campaign - so any man wanting
to pamper himself should go down to their 2 stores and donate to a worthy
cause at the same time
- The launch of our first photography exhibition, with top celebrity
photographer Rankin
- The final judging of the Brass Monkey's Bold As Brass competition
- where brave contestants are asked to photograph themselves wearing
nothing but their brass monkeys in the most unusual places!
The facts about male cancers
- Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer with 19,500 new cases
diagnosed each year in the UK. It is predicted to overtake both lung
and breast cancer to become the most common cancer in the UK by 2018.
Despite this fact, prostate cancer remains massively under-funded
- Testicular cancer is the most common cancer amongst young men, particularly
between the ages of 20 and 35. Cases have risen by 70% in the last 20
years yet a MORI poll commissioned by everyman revealed that men are
dangerously ignorant; 84 per cent know little or nothing about it
Where the money will go
- everyman is raising funds to establish the UK's first dedicated male
cancer research centre - the everyman male cancer research centre -
at The Institute's site in Sutton
- The fundraising target is £6 million, of which £2.9 million
has been raised to date. £3 million is needed to build the centre,
£2 million will go towards research and £1 million towards
purchasing essential research equipment
- The centre will be jointly headed up by Professor Colin Cooper and
Professor Alan Horwich, both from The Institute of Cancer Research
