Real life stories

Stafford Scholes

I discovered I had prostate cancer after being taken to hospital when I had serious difficulty urinating and a biopsy confirmed cancer.

My doctor actually said to me: "if it was up to me, I would go for the knife"! In the end I was put on hormone treatment combined with 'watchful waiting'.

I knew nothing about prostate cancer and I didn't even know what questions I should be asking, but once I began my treatment I started to do some extensive research.

I'm now glad that I did not have my prostate removed - so far my hormone treatment has been a success and I have avoided the risk of permanent side-effects from surgery.

Following my experience, I'm determined to ensure that other men in a similar situation have the opportunity to access the information, support and help that they need.

I have set up the North Durham Prostate Cancer Support Group to provide this service to men in my local area.
