Virgin Money teamed up with Everyman in 2006 to raise £250,000 to help fund vital research into testicular and prostate cancer through a series of fundraising events and initiatives. These activities were also aimed to educate men and women about the signs and symptoms of male cancer.
Big V Sail
Starting Cork Week 2006 with a bang Virgin Money’s inaugural Big V Sail was given a fantastic send off by Dee Caffari on 10th July as ten teams of experienced and novice sailors set sail on their race from Portsmouth to Cork.
After 2 days, 1 hour, 14 minutes and 39 seconds John Merrick’s team crossed the finish line to set the new World Sailing Speed record (WSSRC) with a smiling Ben Fogel at the helm. “I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and it’s fantastic to get my sea legs back and set a new record.” said Ben after spraying all his crew with champagne!
Not far behind were Pi Squared, they beat John Merricks on corrected time to become the Big V Sail’s first overall winner by just 22 minutes! Team Caffari’s Audacious crossed the finish line third.
Thursday evening saw the Royal Cork Yacht Club host the Big V Sail Party, with Dee Caffari presenting the prizes. Dee said, “Of course I’m disappointed Team Caffari didn’t beat Ben’s Team, but it was a fantastic race and the crew really enjoyed it, both on and off the water. It’s just the right length of race to get sailors interested in off shore racing. We’ll be back again next time to ensure we give them a run for their money!”

They lent their support and donated some ‘crown jewel’ songs to the B*ll*cks to Cancer! CD in aid of the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign, and was released Monday 24 July 2006.
